Like expression (LD 1)

**EXPRESSIONS WITH LIKE** (Leadership 1)

The expression “like” can express different meanings: verb, preposition and conjunction.

*When we want to talk about our preferences, we use “like” as a verb:

Eg.1: I like to play soccer.

Eg.2: I like that movie!

*When we want to express similarity, we use “like” as a preposition, but after the verbs look, seem, feel, taste and sound.

Eg.1: Pillar looks like her mother.
Eg.2: It seems like you’re doing the right thing.

*When we want to express comparison, we use “like” as a preposition too.

Eg.1: He talks like a child.

Eg.2: There are many means of transportation in this city like** bus, taxi, train.

** Notice that in this case, the preposition “like” can be substitute by “such as”, and the meaning continues the same.

*When we want to express in the same manner as or as if, we use “like” as a conjunction:

Eg.1: Neither Jane nor Larry draw cartoons like he did.
Eg.2: We sing like those famous singers.

***Pay attention not to confuse letters C and D.

Letter C – After the preposition “like”, we have a noun (or an article (a/an)+ noun).

Eg.1: He talks like a child. (article + noun)
Eg.2: There are many means of transportation in this city like bus, taxi, train. (nouns)

Letter D – After the conjunction “like”, we have a pronoun.

Eg.1: Neither Jane nor Larry draw cartoons like he did. (he = personal pronoun).
Eg.2: We sing like those famous singers. (those = demonstrative pronoun).

If you have more doubts, tell me, ok?!

See you :)

How to improve your listening skills

Hello, dear students!

I received the following question this week. I put it here because it's an interesting question. Enjoy it!

"How can I improve my listening skills?"

Well, you can put in practice some of the following tips:

* Try, first, to listen to the CD (it can be your own CD) without looking at the audioscripts. Get a sheet of paper and write down some words and/or expressions from the listening. Then, you can listen again to try to understand the story.

* Later, listen to the CD again and try to understand some details, some complete sentences. Of course, if the text is big, you can pause at some parts. It will become easier.

* After doing this, if you still present any difficulties, you can take a look at the audioscript (at the end of the book). When you practice, you will know that this procedure will not be so common, and you'll be independent.

* Another way of improving your listening skills is to listen to some English songs and read the lyrics.

* You can also watch some movies. Start with a movie that you already know, but put the subtitles in English to be easier to identify and associate the words. Later, you remove the subtitles and try other ones.

* Whe you gain more practice you can watch some videos and specific channels such as BBC World and CNN.

I hope you've liked this tip. Now, put it in practice!!! You'll see the results.

Have a nice week.

See you :)

Step by step:

4B - FRIDAY

TITANIC SCENES (3rd speech)

Friends, sorry my delay.

I chose the best scenes for your speech.

My advice: start writing your scripts. It must be given to me on April 30th.

SCENES:

1) Jack and Rose's first meeting.
2) The most famous scene (open arms).
3) At the dinner party (here you can create a dialog envolving all the characters).
4) Jack and Rose's first kiss (and when he draws her image [only interpretation-no real kiss!!!]).
5) Titanic and the iceberg (it sinks into the ocean).
6) Jack dies and Rose survives (write about their relationship before his deaph-as shown in the film).

If you want, you can add and modify some scenes. If you have any doubts, send me an e-mail (victormazzoleni@hotmail.com).

P.S.: Do not start making your speech one night before the presentation. START NOW (ALTOGETHER)!!!

Good luck!
